The importance of healthy teeth in pets
Clean teeth and a healthy mouth are important for a healthy, happy, and pain–free life. We all know the health benefits in humans of having no dental disease and this is the same for dogs and cats. Having a mouth with infection or rotten or broken teeth makes pets unhappy and increases the risk of infection and organ disease elsewhere in the body. We frequently get feedback from owners whose pets have had a dental appointment with extractions, and they report that they did not realise how much the dental disease had been negatively affecting their pet’s life. We can provide guidance on effective teeth cleaning for your dog or cat.
How much can dog dentistry cost?
The cost of dental care for dogs can vary depending on several factors. These include the extent of dental disease, your dog’s size and age, and whether additional procedures such as extractions, dental x-rays, or blood tests are required. To be able to give you a detail cost estimate we need to check your pets mouth. If you’d like tailored information or a dental check-up for your dog, our team are here to discuss your pet’s needs and find the required treatment.

What are the common dental disease signs I need to watch out for?
While some signs are more noticeable than others, it’s important to know what to look out for. Dental disease affects a significant number of dogs and cats, with more than 80% of dogs and 70% of cats developing dental issues by age 3. It’s not just a matter of minor discomfort. Dental problems can lead to serious health issues.
Dental disease signs to watch out for are:
- Persistent bad or unusual breath (halitosis). This is often one of the first hints that there are dental issues.
- Visible tartar or plaque on the teeth (yellow or brown deposits, especially near the gum line).
- Red, swollen or bleeding gums. Usually indicating gum inflammation (gingivitis) or early periodontal disease.
- Dropping food, chewing on one side, or reluctance to eat hard biscuits or treats.
- Pawing at the mouth, rubbing the face on furniture/floor, or other signs of discomfort in the jaw or mouth.
- Loose, broken or missing teeth. This is usually a sign that dental disease has progressed.
- Excessive drooling or swelling around the muzzle, face or under the eyes, especially in more advanced cases.
